Embu county has drafted regulations such as training farmers to direct them on safe use of chemicals together with the Kenya Agriculture and Livestock Research Organisation (KARLO).This is directed at proper management of production, consumption and marketing of miraa.

“The guidelines will form part of a broader policy which includes addressing the adverse effects of miraa to consumers and mitigate societal challenges associated with Muguka, as its popularly known”.Said the CEC agriculture Annie Nyaga.

Last year President Uhuru Kenyatta appointed a Miraa task force, now the county government has started to construct five earth dams in Kamugushu in Mbeti South, Nyuari in Mavuria,Gitumbiri in Nthawa and Kiangithi in Evurore and Murindi in Mavuria and seven shades to support miraa farmers as part of the implementation of the project.The funds have been drawn from the county’s allocation sh 167 million under
the ministry of Agriculture.

The Miraa task-force has toured Ethiopia, Mozambique and Djibouti in a market expansion drive.This comes a week after Israel opened its doors for the Kenyan Miraa.

The project is expected to recoup the lose of the UK market four years ago. It was sealed by a Meru Khat lobby group led by Igembe North MP Maoka Maore.
